Split System Air Conditioners – Everything You Need To Know

Summer is officially here, bringing with it sweltering Perth days and some uncomfortable nights. If you don’t want to suffer through the heat but feel like you’ve left it too late to install aircons – you haven’t! A split system air con is the easiest and quickest system to install, so you can get that cool, comfortable feeling in no time at all. Here’s everything you need to know about Split System Air Cons.

What is a Split System?

A Split System is a small Air Conditioning Unit which is mounted onto an internal wall of a house. It is ‘split’ into two units – one inside and one outside – hence the name. Split Systems can both heat and cool your home, giving you a year-round solution. They have a sleek design and can blend into your decor almost seamlessly.

What size do I need?

The size and power of your Split System will be determined by the size of the room it’s being installed in. Below is a rough guide of Fujitsu’s range of Split Systems and the suitable system:

  • 2.5kW – 3.4kW heats and cools a room 18m squared
  • 3.5kW – 4.8kW heats and cools a room 25m squared
  • 4.0kW – 6.0kW heats and cools a room 35m squared
  • 6.3kW – 7.2kW heats and cools a room 40m squared
  • 7.1kW – 8.0kW heats and cools a room 50m squared
  • 8.0kW – 10kW heats and cools a room 60m squared

Having your Split System Installed

The first step of having your Split System installed is to choose where it is going to go. It’s best to position it out of direct sunlight and heat sources which will increase the life of the system. Keep in mind that the location of the unit also needs to be in close proximity to an outside wall where the outside unit can sit.

In preparation for your Ambience Air technician coming to install the system, it’s helpful for you to clear the area – remove couches, cabinets or shelving units that may cause obstruction for the technician. You will also need to do this for the outside area – make sure to clean up any debris where the outside unit will be placed. Although not recommended, if this needs to sit on soft ground (soil or grass) you will need to put down some bricks or a concrete block. It is recommended that the outside system is installed onto paving or mounted on to the wall where it will be away from condensation and moisture from the ground.

This will be discussed with you before proceeding with the installation of your new Ambience Air Split System.

Cleaning a Split System

Cleaning a Split System helps increase the life of your system, while assisting in maintaining good air quality. It’s best to only attempt cleaning the Filter Panels and leaving the inner workings to technicians. Typically, a Split System will have two inbuilt Filter Panels which are revealed after you pop open the plastic cover.

  1. Remove the panels.
  2. Thoroughly brush or vacuum them to remove all lingering dirt or grime.
  3. If needed, soak in hot water to remove stubborn grime.
Important: Ensure they are completely dry before putting back into the system, otherwise there is a risk of growing mould.
  4. Spray with Antibacterial Spray.
  5. Install back into the system.
  6. Clean the exterior.

Depending on how often you use your Split System, it is recommended to clean the Filter Panels twice a year before Summer and Winter. If you have access to the Manufacturer’s Instructions, this will tell you where to start for the particular system you have bought.
